How does it work?

Many companies, across a variety of industries, need to send cargo that requires protection from ambient conditions such as temperature, humidity and more.

Certain goods need to maintain a very specific temperature during transportation, for example, sensitive pharmaceutical products or high-tech components. Temperature-controlled logistics is focused on securing the safe storage and transportation of temperature-sensitive cargo.

Temperature-controlled air cargo shipments

To ensure the safe delivery of goods that require temperature control it takes the collaboration of multiple parties. It is the manufacturer's responsibility to make sure that all parties involved understand the conditions under which the product shall be shipped, for example, that all follow the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) set out for the goods at hand. The SOP will vary depending on the type of product being shipped and the trade lane.

Air freight is for many the preferred mode of transport for temperature-sensitive goods as it helps reduce geographical challenges, mitigates lack of ground infrastructure and decreases shipment times which helps reduce the amount of time the goods are exposed to external conditions. Another significant advantage is the reduction of time-to-market, especially for goods that cannot afford to be delayed such as new product introductions.

The successful delivery of temperature-controlled air cargo normally requires the involvement of all or a selection of:

  • the shipper of the goods
  • a service provider such as a forwarder or integrator
  • an airline
  • a packaging solutions provider
